Sunday Preview: Abound in the Lord

When the daily grind often consumes us, losing sight of the greater purpose that should guide our actions is easy. This is why Paul’s exhortation to abound in the Lord is a charge for us to not only rediscover our spiritual compass but to go beyond – to excel in the work of the Lord. This principle, deeply embedded in the New Testament, urges us to elevate our love and service for God beyond mere obligation. 1 Corinthians 15:58 not only presents this idea, but it sets the tone for the subsequent instructions in chapter 16 about embracing our duties with zeal and abundance.

Paul highlights the spirit of giving as a testament to abounding in the Lord’s work. The call for a collection for the saints in Jerusalem is not just a request for assistance but a lesson in stewardship and generosity. Setting aside a portion of one’s earnings as a contribution to the church's treasury ("thesaurus") on the first Sunday of the week demonstrates commitment and thoughtful consideration of how one can give back to God It goes beyond the mechanics of giving, stressing the heart's position – that giving should be generous, voluntary, and joyful, as seen in 2 Corinthians 9.7.

One’s material wealth does not limit this spirit of generosity. Despite their extreme poverty, the Macedonians showcased an overflow of generosity, teaching us the value of sacrificial giving. This principle is summed up in the principle of sowing and reaping; our investment in God’s kingdom is directly proportional to the abundance we receive, 2 Corinthians 9.6, Luke 6.38.

Yet, abounding in the Lord’s work extends far beyond financial contributions. It calls for excellence in all facets of our spiritual lives. Paul desired an extended stay with the Corinthians to deepen their work, 1 Corinthians 16.6-7, equipping them, Ephesians 4.12, and preparing them for good works, 2 Timothy 3.17. From this, we see that our devotion to God is manifested in our pursuit of excellence, whether in ministry, worship, or personal growth. Worship is our weekly opportunity to engage deeply with God, embracing a spirit of thanksgiving and praise that honors Him.

Never forget you operate from the position of victory, 1 Corinthians 15.57. This is the foundation upon which you build our efforts. Our endeavors in the Lord are meaningful and not in vain. Thus, serve the Lord with fervor, engaging your emotions and will, and fully commit to the path laid out for you.

To those seeking victory in their lives, the journey begins with Jesus. By anchoring our efforts in Him, we are assured of success and empowered to excel in every aspect of our service to God. When we abound in the Lord, we define success through the lens of faith, service, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

As you prepare for worship on Sunday, ask yourself:
  • What does it mean to "abound in the Lord," and how can this principle be applied in our daily lives beyond the realm of financial giving?
  • How does the concept of sacrificial giving challenge our current attitudes toward generosity and stewardship?
  • How can we pursue excellence in our spiritual lives?
  • Reflect on the Jesus’ teaching “For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you” from Luke 6:38. How does this principle influence your giving?
  • Considering our ultimate victory in Christ, 1 Corinthians 15:57, how does this assurance inspire you to serve wholeheartedly in the Lord’s work?
