Friday First: Thoughtful Prayer

How can we be spiritually stable in the most trying of times? The key is what Paul says in Philippians 4.1…. stand firm in the Lord. Paul wants them to be rooted & grounded. What follows in 4.2-9 are the principles of how we stand strong … in this manner… as he says in 4.1.

In Philippians 4.6, Paul discusses the importance and attitude of prayer. When the difficulties come, we go to God, crying out to Him with thanksgiving. We trust His knowledge, power, and promises. And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4.19. Nothing escapes God and nothing is outside His purposes.

What is the result of thankful prayer? Peace. The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, 4.7. Whatever God’s answer is and whenever it comes, God will provide you with peace. When we trust God, we get a steadfast mind, that surpasses all understanding. This protects our hearts and minds … all because we are in union with Christ.

On Sunday we will talk about:
  • The solution for worry.
  • The result of a thankful heart.

As you prepare for worship, please think about these questions.
  1. What enables us to cry out to God with thanksgiving during the midst of suffering and trials?
  2. How can we strengthen our trust in God?
  3. What is God’s gift when we pray to Him in thankfulness?
  4. What is the function of peace?
  5. Over what does peace guard?
