Be Like Your Father: A Preview of This Sunday’s Lesson from Ephesians 5:1-2

Every day, whether we know it or not, we are reflecting someone. Children often echo the voice, gestures, or attitude of their parents. Spiritually speaking, the same is true: we reflect the One we follow.

That’s why Paul’s words in Ephesians 5:1-2 are so powerful:

“Be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”

This week at Cornerstone, we’ll unpack what it truly means to imitate God. This command isn’t about acting spiritual or trying harder—it’s about reflecting the very character of our heavenly Father. We’ll explore not just who God is—holy, loving, faithful, gracious, and just—but why it matters that our lives echo His.

Here’s what you can expect from the lesson:
  • A deeper understanding of God’s character and how it shapes our own
  • Practical reasons why living like God leads to greater joy, influence, and spiritual growth
  • Three simple, powerful ways to begin reflecting God: walking in love, pursuing holiness, and practicing forgiveness

God isn’t calling us to perfection in our own strength. He’s calling us to transformation through His Spirit. And when we imitate Him, we don’t just grow spiritually—we become a clearer picture of Christ to the world around us.

Join us this Sunday as we answer the call: Be imitators of God as beloved children.
  1. What does it practically look like to “imitate God” in daily life?
  2. ]Which attribute of God's character—love, holiness, faithfulness, grace, justice, or patience—do you find most challenging to reflect, and why?
  3. How is Christ’s love different from worldly definitions of love? What makes His example both challenging and empowering?
  4. How does your understanding of being God’s child help or hinder your ability to reflect Him? How can a deeper identity in Christ shape your behavior?
  5. How does our imitation of God serve as a witness to the world (John 13:35)?
