Where is God in the Flood?

The images from Texas and New Mexico last week were heartbreaking: homes swept away, families grieving, entire towns underwater. When disasters strike, they often shake more than just the ground; they shake our faith.

Where is God in This?

First, we need to remember: God didn’t cause the flood. Ever since sin entered the world, creation has been broken. “The whole creation has been groaning…” (Romans 8:22). Floods and fires are symptoms of that brokenness, not punishments from God.

God Didn't Cause the Storm, But He Walks with us Through It

Even in tragedy, God is near. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted…” (Psalm 34:18). He doesn’t promise a life without storms, but He does promise this: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you…” (Isaiah 43:2).

Why does He allow these disasters? While we may not always understand the “why,” we know He brings purpose even from pain.

God Can Bring Good -- Even Out of Devastation

“What was meant for evil, God meant for good…” (Genesis 50:20). Sometimes tragedy shakes loose what comfort never could. It draws people back to what matters. It reminds us we’re not in control, and never were.

Let’s also resist the urge to assign blame. This isn’t about politics or conspiracies. Nature is broken. Ever since the Fall in Genesis 3, storms have come, and suffering has followed.

Nature is Broken, But God is Not

So, how should Christians respond?
  • Pray for the hurting and displaced.
  • Give or serve through trusted efforts.
  • Point people to Jesus, the anchor in the storm.

“Let your light shine before others…” (Matthew 5:16). This is the time to shine.

And if all this has you down, emotionally, spiritually, physically, know this:
This flood does not have the final word.

“The Lord sits enthroned over the flood…” (Psalm 29:10). He is not shaken. He is not absent. He is not done.

God doesn’t always calm the storm around us, but He will calm the storm within us.
He is your shelter. Your strength. Your Savior.
