Even When We Can't See It

Hebrews 11.1 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the convictions of things not seen.”

2 Corinthians 5.7 “We walk by faith, not by sight.”

We’re told to have faith in things that we can’t see… We’re told in scripture to believe in a God whose face is hidden from us behind the veil of a broken world. We’re told in scriptures to believe in a Chosen Son who gave his life for us, even though we’ve never felt the scars on his hands. We’re told in scripture to believe in a Spirit that lives and moves in us, even though our spirit often feels so worn and tired. We read about it, but how do we experience life with God—even when we can’t see him?

How can we have that sort of faith when there are so many things that are in plain view that drive our vision down and away from heaven? Poverty. Sickness. Social tension. The every day stressors of life are the things that we do see—these are the things that we do experience.

…But God is working through all these experiences. He is there with us in the valley. The Psalmist said this of his own experience in Psalm 23.4. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Can you say the same? God is very real… and he walks alongside us at our invitation.

He has not promised to make our path free of trials. He has not promised to make our path free of doubts. He has not promised to make our path free or persecution. He HAS promised to make our journey worth it—through all of the difficulties that we can’t see. For the Christian, the destination at the end of the road is promised to us. We will see his face. We will walk with the Son. The Spirit will be the very breath in our lungs.

Even when we can’t see it—God is working.
