Sunday Preview: Good Soil

During November, we have been exploring the parable of the soils and its significance to our spiritual life. The parable presents four different types of soil, which represent the condition of our hearts. The emphasis in this parable is on the person who receives the word, rather than the seed itself. The good soil is described as one who hears and understands the word, welcomes it, holds onto it, and produces fruit. This person truly cares about the instructions of the word and seeks to live according to them.

Fruitfulness is the ultimate point of having good soil. It is the evidence of the divine life within us. This fruit can be seen in our attitude, righteous behavior, and soul-winning efforts. The fruit of the Spirit, as described in Galatians 5:22-23, includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. It is through bearing fruit in every good work that we display our faith in action.

However, we may face challenges and discouragement along the way. The enemies of the gospel, such as Satan, the flesh, and the world, may try to hinder our growth. But we are encouraged to hold on to the word and endure, producing fruit despite the obstacles.
It is important to remember that sowing doesn't depend on our talents or abilities. Sometimes the seeds we sow may not bear immediate fruit, but we must trust in God's timing and continue to wait. We are also called to examine ourselves and determine what kind of soil our hearts are. If our hearts need plowing and softening, we should surrender to the Lord and seek His transformation.

Remember, the condition of your heart determines your reception of the gospel. Cultivate your heart, become rooted in Christ, and bear fruit in every good work. Hold on to the word and surrender to the Lord, allowing Him to plow your heart.
As we come together Sunday we will:
  • Define good soil.
  • Learn how to cultivate it in order to be as effective as possible.
As you prepare for worship, you might think on these questions:
  1. How does the parable of the soils challenge us to examine the condition of our own hearts?
  2. In what ways can we cultivate our hearts to be more receptive to the gospel?
  3. What are some practical ways in which we can bear fruit in our attitudes, behavior, and relationships?
  4. The enemies of the gospel, such as Satan, the flesh, and the world, can hinder our growth and fruitfulness. How do you personally navigate these challenges and remain steadfast in your faith?
  5. Have you ever experienced a season of waiting as you sowed the seed of the gospel? How did you maintain hope and perseverance during that time?
