Sunday Preview: The Power of the Word

Two weeks ago we began our October sermon series by talking about the Seed … the Word of God that has the power to bring salvation and transform lives. It is important for us to focus on the effectiveness of the Word. It is able to provide us with wisdom for salvation by faith in Christ Jesus. It is also useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness. This all leads to maturity. Focusing on the word should be a distinguishing characteristic of the Cornerstone Church. It is behind everything we do. Our personal lives are dominated by it. When God speaks to us, we need to heed what He says.
On Sunday we will briefly focus on the context behind 2 Timothy 3.15-17. Paul told Timothy to live his life in contrast to the world. As it grew worse and worse in its immorality and hatred for God, he was to continue in or hold fast to the Scriptures, because in them is life. He (and us) need to be unapologetic to the unchanging truth of God’s word.
We’ll focus on two main things in this lesson. First, we’ll learn how the word contains power … the power to save. Over and over again the words of both Testaments testify to its life changing power to bring salvation and help with personal transformation. Jesus said the one who hears His word and believes in Him will be saved, John 5.24. The Law of the Lord is perfect. It restores the soul. The scriptures have power because they are inspired, 2 Timothy 3.16a.
We’ll also focus on the usefulness of the word. It provides us with doctrine (teaching), and it impacts our behavior. It corrects us when we need it, and it leads us (trains us) for maturity. It shows us what righteousness and holiness is. All of this has the ability to make us complete and equipped for what God calls us to do.

Before you worship, here are some questions that will prepare you for this lesson:
  1. Why was Timothy told to continue in the Scriptures? What was this in contrast to?
  2. What does it mean that the Scriptures bring salvation?
  3. Why is the Bible our greatest tool of evangelism?
  4. By what do the Scriptures have power?
  5. Are you an active participant in the process of God’s word making you complete?
