Friday First - Looking at the Glory of the Lord 4

During October we have focused on Jesus in the present. We have been in 2 Corinthians where we find a passage that is almost inexhaustible in what we can learn. Looking into the Glory of the Lord is based on two passages that serve as bookends on the section. 2 Corinthians 3.18 says new covenant believers come with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 4.6 says God has shone in our hearts, bringing the light of the knowledge of God’s glory, in the face of Jesus Christ. This privilege is given to those who believe on Christ and have received the new Covenant promises.

On Sunday we’ll talk about what the Christian life is all about, which is about having your eyes fixed on Jesus, who is the author and finisher of our faith. The Christian always has Jesus in focus … always, in every situation … looking at the face of Christ and finding the revealed glory of God. For Paul, writing in the most difficult and extreme of circumstances, he knew the solution for all his trouble was found by looking to Christ. As long as he kept the proper focus, he found strength, comfort, encouragement, and even joy … all while enduring great uncertainty and pain. The same can be true for us. When we look at the Lord as revealed in the pages of God’s word, finding Jesus as revealed by the Spirit, we learn to trust in Him.

On Sunday we will discuss:
  • Our motivation. Looking into the glory of the Lord is the same is loving Jesus.
  • Our humility. If one is not humble, he is not looking into the glory of the Lord.
  • Our thankfulness. God has personally enlightened your heart for you to see Jesus.

As you prepare for worship, please think about these questions.
  1. What does Philippians 1.21 mean to you?
  2. How can you make Jesus more of the focus of everything in your life?
  3. Who does grace belong to?
  4. What does a lack of humility say about one's looking into the face of Christ?
  5. What is it to be a Christian?
