Friday First - The First Gospel Sermon

Can you imagine being present in that crowd on Pentecost? What would it have been like to see and witness the Spirit come in such a visible, supernatural way? When Peter begins to explain the situation, the message he delivers will be made clear: The Messianic age has come. The unbelieving Jews were in need to repentance and understanding that they killed Jesus of Nazareth, who was declared by miracles, signs, and wonders to be the Son of God. If they didn’t come to believe on Jesus, they would be eternally lost.

What does Peter do to convict them and spurn them to turn to the Lord? He focuses on Jesus by looking at the past and how their own prophets had predicted this day to come. The prophets had all spoken about the life of Jesus of Nazareth. They spoke about His substitutionary death, His resurrection on the third day, and ultimately his exaltation.
On this occasion, with the attention of so many people, Peter is going to preach the gospel. He has one goal … to proclaim Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation that will enable a person to escape the coming judgment. Now is the time to call on Jesus.

On Sunday, we will focus on:
  • Jesus’ life
  • Jesus’ death
  • Jesus’ resurrection
  • Jesus’ ascension

As you prepared for worship, please think about these questions.
  1. What was the purpose of Jesus working miracles, signs, and wonders?
  2. If Jesus was delivered up by the Father to the cross, how were the people guilty of killing Him?
  3. How could Jesus approach the cross with confidence? (Acts 2.25-28)
  4. What is the symbolism associated with Jesus being at the right hand of God?
  5. What, to you, makes Peter’s sermon so powerful?
