Friday First - What Can Change a Heart?

Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life, Proverbs 4.23.

While we understand the importance of keeping our heart pure, sometimes we sounder how we can change the hearts of others. It may be a loved one, a friend, or a co-worker who comes to mind. What does the Bible say about the human heart?

Sometimes, we think a quick fix might work. It’s a sign of our times. If you’re looking for a quick fix when it comes to changing a heart, you may find things appear irreversible after a while of trying. Remember, many things look irreversible until God gets involved.

We need to trust Him. He has a different timetable than we do. Will we take the long term view? God works in ways we do not understand.

Will we trust Him? Will we rely on His unlimited power? Will we be still and allow Him to work?
What are some things we must keep in mind about the importance of changing a heart?

• How God calls on us to surrender our heart.
• Three things that prevent us from changing our heart.
• Six things that can change a heart.

As you prepare for worship on Sunday, please give consideration to these questions:

• What did the Gentile’s callousness of heart lead to? (See Ephesians 4.19b)
• What does it mean to “put on” the new self? What is the imagery behind it?
• What will happen if we do not confess our problems?
• Why is prayer such an important component in changing a heart?
• From what must we guard our hearts?
