Friday First - When Trials Come

James 1.1-12 presents us with a serious challenge. Sooner or later there will be a time of trial for us. It might be heartache, sorrow, disappointment, or betrayal. It’s not a matter of “if,” but “when.” It has been said that there are only three types of people in the world: those in the middle of a trial; those just coming out of a trial; those who are about to go into a trial.
Trials are simply a part of human existence in a fallen world.

When that time comes, how will you react?

Typically, it is our nature to want to hurry through times of difficulty. But when they occur, we must see them as an opportunity to grow closer in our relationship with God. Your trial is a chance for you to deepen your dependence on God. Trials remind us that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Trials often drive us to the point of being desperate for God.

On Sunday we will talk about how to view trials so that we will have the strength to carry on. We will seek to understand that:
  • Trials will come.
  • Wisdom helps us prepare for trials.
  • Wisdom helps us see the source of our trials.
  • Wisdom helps us discern the purpose for the trial.

As you prepare for worship on Sunday, please give consideration to these questions:
  1. What trials are you currently facing? How are you reacting to them?
  2. When is the best time to begin preparing for trials?
  3. Why is it important to understand the source of the trials we experience?
  4. How have the trials you’ve experienced shaped your character for the better?
  5. How have your trials equipped you to serve others?
