Week 12 - The Parable of the Householder

May 18, 2025    Mark Ringle, Matthew Ringle

In the first century, scribes were revered as scholars of the Jewish law, preserving and teaching the Scriptures. In the Parable of the Householder (Matthew 13:51-52), Jesus redefines this role, likening his disciples to scribes who, having embraced the kingdom of heaven, bring forth treasures both old and new. This parable, unique to Matthew’s Gospel, concludes a series of teachings on the kingdom, challenging the disciples to understand and share God’s revelation faithfully. It reflects God’s grace in entrusting His people with the truths of the Old Testament and the New Covenant, calling them to steward these gifts purposefully as they await Christ’s return. The parable invites us to embrace our role as kingdom stewards, teaching others with wisdom and joy while valuing the continuity of God’s plan.
