In Romans 4, two systems of justification are under view and are presented in contrast. It must be understood that the problem of trusting one’s obedience as a way of retaining salvation is far from being only a Jewish problem. It is still a problem today for Christians who struggle with legalism. So, Paul is also working to defend the cross. Faith + works nullify the cross, Galatians 3.21.
