Week 5 - Jonah 1-2: Jonah and the Great Fish

The account of Jonah takes place during a time of great prosperity and luxury in Israel. It was a time of intense nationalistic pride. To Israel's east a growing and brutal enemy, Assyria, loomed. God calls Jonah to go Nineveh and call on the Assyrian people to repent. Jonah flees to Tarshish. After being thrown overboard on a ship, Jonah is swallowed up by a great fish God prepared. While there three days and nights Jonah turns back to God and promises to fulfill his vows.
