Week 2: David Mourns Saul & Jonathan

Oct 14, 2025

In this lesson, we study David’s response to the deaths of Saul and Jonathan in 2 Samuel 1:1–27. Instead of rejoicing at the downfall of his enemy, David grieved deeply, showing integrity, respect for God’s order, and loyalty to his friend Jonathan. His lament, “How the mighty have fallen!” gives us a model for honest sorrow, covenant friendship, and reverence for God’s anointed. This chapter reminds us that grief is both necessary and godly, that our words and actions carry great weight, and that God can bring hope even from tragedy.
