We Belong to an Unshakable Kingdom

Every Sunday, Christians around the world come together to worship, yet how often do we pause to reflect on what’s truly happening when we gather?

We’re not merely singing songs or listening to a message. We are entering the presence of the King, not a distant ruler hidden behind clouds and smoke, but a gracious Redeemer who welcomes us with open arms. According to Hebrews 12, we haven’t come to Mount Sinai, a place of fear and trembling; we’ve come to Mount Zion, the city of the living God.

On Sunday, we will conclude our June series “Our Great King” by focusing on Hebrews 12:18-29. We will see that, although everything in this world can be shaken, God’s kingdom will never be moved. Our Savior—Jesus Christ—not only reigns above all, but He also invites us to worship, serve, and stand firm in His unshakable reign.

Two Mountains, Two Realities
Hebrews contrasts two powerful spiritual scenes.
  • Mount Sinai is a mountain of smoke, fire, and fear. It represents the holiness of God, the weight of the law, and the separation caused by sin.
  • Mount Zion, on the other hand, is filled with joy, access, and grace. It represents the new covenant, made possible through Jesus's blood.
At Sinai, the people stood at a distance. At Zion, we are invited to draw near.

The Warning and the Wonder
Hebrews also warns. Just as God’s voice shook the earth at Sinai, a greater shaking is coming, one that will rattle heaven and earth. Everything that can be shaken will fall. Only one thing will remain: the kingdom of God.

And here’s the good news: if you belong to Christ, you are part of that kingdom. Not by works, not by ritual, but by grace. And because of that, the writer says, “Let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.”

We don’t come casually. We come gratefully. Joyfully. Humbly. We come as people who have been rescued by grace and brought near by the blood of the King.

Live Like You Belong
This world is fragile. Your career, your health, your wealth—these can all be shaken. But if your life is anchored in Christ, you are part of a kingdom that cannot be moved.

So live like it.
Worship like it.
Serve like it.
Stand firm like it.

Because no matter what shakes around you, He is still King. And His name is Jesus.
  1. What “shakable” things in life compete for your trust?
  2. How does Sinai vs. Zion shape your view of God?
  3. What does “reverence and awe” in worship look like?
  4. Why do people often seek God in crisis?
  5. How can you live as a citizen of an unshakable kingdom?
