Friday First: Parenting on Purpose

This Sunday concludes my part in this summer’s series on Godly families. We have talked about the importance of children being obedient and how that comes with a promise of a long full life. We have talked about how children have to be taught to be obedient, which involves training and discipline, i.e., parenting on purpose.

Children need to be taught respect and obedience and they need to be disciplined for disobedience and disrespect. All of this is in the context of a home that is under the control of parents who continually make the dominating influence of that home the word of God. A home where a biblical worldview is stressed … life viewed through the eyes of Scripture.

In Sunday’s lesson we will take an in-depth look at Ephesians 6.4. The verse is made up of two sentences. One is negative. The other positive. What is the purpose of Paul’s teaching here?
As we gather together on Sunday we will see the Lord’s provision as we:
  • Continue what we didn’t finish last week.
  • Learn what it means to not exasperate children.
  • Discover what Paul means by instructing fathers (parents) to bring up children.

As you prepare for worship be prepared to answer the following questions:
  1. How does Ephesians 6:1-4 define the roles of both parents and children in fostering a godly relationship?
  2. How can parents ensure they are guiding their children with love and respect without stirring up anger or resentment?
  3. How can parents discern the right balance between discipline and encouragement, ensuring they don’t exasperate their children?
  4. How can the church and society support families in cultivating an environment where children obey their parents out of respect and not out of fear?
  5. How can parents instill a sense of respect and obedience in their children that extends beyond the parent-child relationship to other areas of life?
